Capturing the essence of Sicily
Simona is a Mediterranean-Italian restaurant that offers a dining experience inspired by the essence of Sicily, with fresh, homemade Sicilian inspired cuisine, along with a waterfront view in downtown Toronto. The interior aesthetic and selected dƩcor also pull influence from mediterranean design style, incorporating many plants and natural materials, along with rich colors, textures, and patterns.

Supporting the vision
The design team at McMillan had a specific element in mind for the ceiling – an undulating beam configuration that would break up the look of the open ceiling and create a sense of organic flow throughout the space.

As the designers explored material options and installation needs, they connected with our team at Fiā„¢ Interiors and were introduced to Acusti-fiā„¢ PET felt. Based on the material’s design versatility, light weight, and overall cost-effectiveness, we partnered on the project and got to work engineering two beam configurations that would integrate with the existing ceiling plan as well as pre-selected LED strip lighting.

Our metal fabrication team bent aluminum to create specific waves for each configuration with two perfectly mirrored rails. They then fabricated the total structures in a way that ensured easy packing, shipping, and installation.

Mission accomplished (with added benefits)
In the end, the two beam configurations stretched 21’ and 41’ across the main dining section of the restaurant, successfully accepted the added strip lighting, and installed with minimal pick points and rigging. The design helped avoid certain HVAC components and allowed for an integration of the sprinkler system.

Because our PET felt was selected as the final material, sound absorption was an added bonus. These two beam configurations lower the overall ceiling height and absorb sound waves that would otherwise bounce off the ceiling, walls, and other hard surfaces, causing reverberation and noise escalation. The reduction in overall noise creates acoustic comfort and enhances the dining experience.
